Robbins Nest - 1962
The 1962 Robbins Nest Covered Bridge is a 57-foot covered bridge that crosses the Jail Branch of the Winooski River in Barre, Washington County, Vermont. The bridge is a queen post design built by Robert R. Robbins. Even though not historic, the bridge was built as a replica of one that stood just downstream and was swept away in the Vermont flood of 1927, and is of authentic design and construction. Ownership of the property has transferred at least once, and in 1990 the owners installed steel beams to reinforce the deck.
The bridge was built to access private land beyond it. The structure’s footings and framework were built in 1962 and the siding was added in 1964. During construction, the trusses were built on the ground nearby and lifted into position by a crane. Steel beams were put under the deck in 1990, along with other restoration work. The bridge is a replica of Old Bridge (WGBC #45-12-77x), once located about one hundred yards downstream, which was destroyed in the flood of November 4, 1927.
