Middle - 1969
The 1969 Middle Covered Bridge in Woodstock of Windsor County was built to replace an iron bridge that had been in use since 1877. The Middle Covered Bridge was constructed following traditional methods. Wooden pegs were used instead of nails, and the bridge was built on dry land and then pulled across the river on scaffolding drawn by oxen walking a capstan. With every turn of the capstan, the bridge was pulled 3 1/3 inches closer to its final destination.
In addition to the Middle Covered Bridge in the village, Woodstock has two other covered bridges, which are located in the hamlets of Taftsville and West Woodstock.
The Middle Covered Bridge is a 139-foot-long Town Lattice Truss. The length of the largest span is 124 feet, and deck clearance width of 14.4 feet, with a vertical clearance above deck clearance at 10.8 feet. It carries Union Street over the Ottaquechee River. Built-in 1969 by Milton Graton, the Middle Covered Bridge contains centuries’ worth of charm! That’s because it was constructed using traditional methods and materials down to the wooden pegs in lieu of nails.
On May 11, 1974, the bridge was set afire by arsonists. It took three years, and almost $55,000 to complete the required repairs.
Of the over 500 covered bridges that were built in the state of Vermont, as of 2019, only 104 remain.
