In Michigan, you are never more than six miles away from water. Not only is Michigan surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, but also has more than 6,500 lakes and 120 major rivers. With all of this water surrounding it, Michigan is home to many bridges, which vary greatly in size and design, and many have become iconic landmarks.

Throughout Michigan's history, countless covered bridges spanned creeks, streams, and rivers. Sadly, only a handful of them remain. Several newer bridges were built to recapture that long-forgotten era. Most of Michigan's covered bridges are located in the south and western part of the Lower Peninsula, with two preserved on the southeastern side of the Mitten. The list of covered bridges includes 10 currently in Michigan. However, the state has more than 11,000 bridges, including metal and wooden bridges. While some are state bridges, others are local bridges.
