Fletcher - 1891
The 1891 Fletcher Covered Bridge in Harrison County, West Virginia. The 62-foot multiple King Post covered bridge located in Harrison County bridge crosses the Tenmile Creek in West Virginia. Built by L. E. Sturm and Soloman Swiger, the stones for the abutments were quarried at the top of a hill near the bridge site. The original building cost was $1,372. Though restored in 2002, the bridge remains almost completely unmodified from its original form. This makes the Fletcher Covered Bridge significant as it continues to allow vehicle traffic, unlike most extant covered bridges that have been reinforced, no longer allowing vehicle traffic or both. The Fletcher Covered Bridge is one of only two covered bridges still standing in Harrison County, the other is the Simpson Creek Covered Bridge. This bridge is in regular use today.
Red board-and-batten siding encloses the structure. The roof is primarily of asphalt composition. The bridge has remained almost completely devoid of modern reinforcement since its initial construction.
In 2002, under a $447,000 contract, Allegheny Restoration and Builders, Inc. of Morgantown restored the Fletcher Covered Bridge, including detouring local traffic while structural timber was replaced and new siding and a metal roof were installed.
