Clover Hollow - 1916
The 1916 Clover Hollow, also known as Sinking Creek Covered Bridge, in Giles County, Virginia. Clover Hollow has a Queen Variant truss. This 70-foot bridge crosses over Sinking Creek in southwest Virginia. Between 1912 and 1919, four covered bridges were built across Sinking Creek in Giles County. Remarkably, three of them are still standing over a century later, though two are now on private land.
The bridge was restored in 2000. It is a single-span modified Howe truss 71 feet long spanning Sinking Creek. It is located north of Newport, Virginia on a bypassed section of Clover Hollow Road. The bridge was left in place for the property owner when it was bypassed in 1949 and closed to vehicular traffic in 1964. It was restored in 1999 and 2000 and is open to pedestrian traffic. The bridge rests on mortared natural stone abutments. The bridge is covered with barn red horizontal tongue and groove siding on the sides and portals. The deck consists of crosswise planking and the roof is covered with green painted tin. The bridge is also known as Newport Bridge.
