The 1883 Witherspoon "Red" Covered Bridge spans over the Licking Creek, near Hays Fording, where it flows into the West Branch of the Conococheague Creek. This Franklin County Bridge was built by S. Stouffer using the Burr truss system. The bridge’s length is eighty-seven feet long by fourteen feet wide, and its wing walls are forty-five feet long. It is the only covered bridge in use today in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

The waters from both the Licking and Conococheague creeks are used to power two turbines at the Irwinton/Anderson Grist Mill, a short distance downstream. The bridge is owned by Franklin County and is in very good condition.
