Walter's Mill - 1859
The 1859 Walter's Mill Bridge originally spanned Coxes Creek in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. This 60 feet long bridge features Burr arch trusses, which were added to its original Multiple Kingpost trusses in 1908 to strengthen the bridge to accommodate automobile traffic. The bridge was built by Christian Ankeny and Jacob Walter for the sum of $318.00 and was completed in August of 1859.
Replaced by the Pennsylvania Department of Highways with a concrete bridge in 1961, Walter's Mill was relocated to the grounds of the Somerset Historical Center (to avoid demolition) and now spans Haupts Run. But first, Walter's Mill Bridge was moved to a private museum, then donated to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1970 to become part of the Historical Center.
Also known as the Cox Creek Covered Bridge, it was extensively restored in 1986.
Walter's Mill Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
