Speakman #2 - 1881
The 1881 Speakman No. 2, or Mary Ann Pyle Covered Bridge, is a historic wooden covered bridge located in East Fallowfield Township near Modena in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Speakman No. 2 is a twin of Speakman No. 1, located a 1/4 mile away and crosses Buck Run.
The bridge was built in 1881 by Menandere Wood and Ferdinand Wood utilizing the Queenpost design. The structure is 75 feet long and 15 feet wide, it crosses Buck Run, it is only open to foot traffic. This is the second of the "Twin Bridges" in the Laurel Reserve, a private property of Brandywine Conservancy and not open to the public. Anyone wishing to visit the bridges must obtain permission from the Brandywine Conservancy, located in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
This bridge and Hayes Clark Bridge were originally built by James B. Pyle, a local landowner, and this one was named after his daughter Mary Ann Prior. The bridge was built at a total cost of $1,938--$1,183 for woodwork and $755 for masonry work. Speakman #2 bridge was rebuilt in 2014.
