The 1866 Red Run Covered Bridge or Oberhaltzer's Covered Bridge is a covered bridge that once spanned Muddy Creek in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster County has the most covered bridges per county in Pennsylvania with 29 covered bridges.
Red Run Bridge was built in 1866 by Elias McMellen and is currently situated on private property next to the Red Run Campground. The bridge has a single-span, wooden, double Burr arch truss design. It is painted red, the traditional color of Lancaster County Covered Bridges, on the outside. Both approaches to the bridge are painted in the traditional white color. This covered bridge was replaced in 1927.
Originally owned by John Oberholtzer, this bridge is variously known as Run Red Grist Mill Bridge and Red Bank Bridge. In 1961 a new concrete bridge was built and the creek was rerouted to bypass the old covered bridge. It is privately owned and no longer open to traffic. The nearby campground has used it for church services in inclement weather, however, at the time of these photos, the bridge was in need of repair and rehabilitation.
Of the 1,500 covered bridges that once stood in the state of Pennsylvania, as of 2019, approximately 200 remain.
