Hess Mill - 1825
The Abram Hess Mill Covered Bridge, Buck Hill Covered Bridge, or Eichelberger's Covered Bridge is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is located on Buck Hill Farm's pond on private property.
The original build date and builder of the covered bridge is unknown. However, it was probably built around 1825 to provide access to Abram Hess's store. In 1844 the bridge was sold to George Eichelberger. That same year the bridge was heavily damaged in a flood and had to be repaired. Theodore D. Cochran rebuilt it at the cost of $799. The bridge was moved, in 1966, to Buck Hill Farm, a private farm located in Warwick Township.
The bridge is 58 feet long and 15 feet wide and is in fair condition. It crosses a farm pond and is only open to foot traffic. The structure is owned and maintained privately, permission must be obtained before entering the bridge. The landscaping surrounding the bridge is very beautiful and well-groomed.
The bridge is one of only three covered bridges in the county with horizontal sideboards.
Of the 1,500 covered bridges that once stood in the state of Pennsylvania, as of 2019, approximately 200 remain.
In 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
