The 1859 Banks Covered Bridge, built with a Burr Truss crossing the Neshannock Creek in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Built on stone foundations, it is supported by steel girders and measures 121 feet long and 15 feet wide.
This single-lane bridge is painted white, both inside and out, and has a height clearance of only 8ft. 9in. and a weight limit of 12 tons. The builder is unknown, while Lawrence County owns and maintains it. It was repaired in 1999, and then again in 2021, at a cost of around $440,000.
All of its wood was restored or replaced, the decking was repaired or replaced where needed, and the foundation was made safe again. Inside the bridge, visitors will find the historical marker: “ In 1980, this historic covered bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.” Automobile and foot traffic still use this covered bridge located in the middle of the Amish countryside.
Unlike many Pennsylvania counties, Lawrence County only possessed perhaps five covered bridges. Today, the Banks Covered Bridge and the McConnell's Mill Covered Bridge are the last two that remain. The Howe truss used by McConnell's Mill bridge is less common, while the Burr arch truss used by the Banks bridge is used by many Pennsylvania bridges.
In 1980, the bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its historical significance, along with the McConnell's Mill bridge.
