Root Road Bridge is a covered bridge spanning the west branch of the Ashtabula River in Monroe Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. The bridge, one of the county's currently 16 drivable bridges, is a two-span Town truss design. During its 1982-83 renovation, the bridge was raised 18 inches, and a new center pier was added.
The bridge was built in 1868 and renovated in 1982-3. A former toll road, just east of the county, ran north and south through the area. Dwight and Gertrude (Hallam) Root had a son, Herbert Root. Herbert married Frances Whitlam, daughter of John H. Whitlam, one of, if not the first, Superintendents of Roads in Ashtabula County, for twenty-five years. He possibly was involved in the construction of the earlier bridges.
Dimensions of this two-span covered bridge over the West Branch Ashtabula River on Root Road: Length of largest span: 40 feet; Length of bridge: 89 feet; Width: 11.3 feet; Height: 10 feet 2 inches; Overhead clearance: 9 feet 4 inches.
Root Road Bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
