Mink Hollow - 1887
The 1887 Mink Hollow Covered Bridge crosses Arney Run in Fairfield County, Ohio. This 54-foot-long span has 7-foot overhangs at each end and is 14 feet wide and 12 feet tall. The bridge was built by Jacob R. "Blue Jeans" Brandt using a Multiple Kingpost Truss with a central X brace and still remains in its original location.
Mink Hollow Covered Bridge is a shortened version of its original name. The bridge actually has the longest name of any covered bridge in the USA: "The Mink Hollow Covered Bridge in Oil Mill Hollow Over Arney Run Near Borcher's Mill." Borcher’s Mill was also called Oil Mill because it converted flax seed into linseed oil. The oil often floated atop of waters of Arney Run. So the bridge has also been referred to as Oil Mill Hollow Bridge.
A restoration was completed in 1996.
Ohio is known for its covered bridges. At one point in time, Fairfield County had 279 timber truss bridges. This was more than any other county. Sadly, most of these no longer exist. It is estimated that there are still 125 wooded covered bridges left in the state. Many of them have been relocated to private properties. Others are cared for by local parks departments. Out of the 125, 17 of these are in Fairfield County.
