Harshman - 1894
The Harshman Covered Bridge near Fairhaven in Preble County, Ohio, was built in 1894 by Everett S. Sherman at the cost of $3,184. This 109-foot Bridge crosses Four Mile Creek. The masonry work was completed by J.M. Acton, with the stone abutments sourced from the Stony Point quarry. A sawmill along the creek near the bridge provided cut lumber.
Harshman Bridge is one of seven Childs trusses in the United States. Patented in 1846 by Horace Childs of New Hampshire, the Childs truss never came into the mainstream of covered bridge building, but Everett S. Sherman, an Ohio bridge builder, revived its use in the late nineteenth century.
Between December 2007 and May 2008, the Harshman Covered Bridge was rehabilitated with new wood siding, a standing seam metal roof, and a rebuilt flooring system at a cost of approximately $340,000. In addition, deficient upper and lower chords were replaced or added. Federal funding financed 95% of the project.
