Hannaway - 1901
The 1901 Hannaway Covered Bridge, an 87-foot span, multiple Kingpost truss crossing Clear Creek in Fairfield County, Ohio. The bridge has a 7-foot overhang at each end and is 16 feet wide and 13 feet tall. The bridge is also known as the Hanaway and Clearport Bridge.
The original bridge was built in 1881 by James W. Buchanan and the replacement bridge was built in 1901. It has suffered many damaging events over the years, the most recent being high water that carried a massive tree that slammed into the bridge knocking it from its abutments. It had to be raised and put on a temporary support platform while many truss timbers and a new floor were replaced. This restoration was completed in 2017. The bridge still sits on its original cut stone abutments and is one of seven bridges that once spanned the 35-mile-long Clear Creek.
Because of the increase in motorized vehicles in the 1930s, one full-length window was added with an awning-type roof to allow visibility of oncoming traffic. The Hannaway was bypassed around 1990 and deteriorated rapidly until it was nearly lost. But in 2000, the county received a $165,425.00 federal grant for bridge restoration. The bridge was raised and stone from old bridge abutments was used for abutment repairs. Bracing, siding, and truss beams also needed to be replaced and or repaired. At the same time its vertical boards were repainted white and security lights were installed. The bridge is open under the eaves for ventilation, while the deck consists of crosswise planking with wide lengthwise runners and it has a shake roof.
Ohio is known for its covered bridges. At one point in time, Fairfield County had 279 timber truss bridges. This was more than any other county. Sadly, most of these no longer exist. It is estimated that there are still 125 wooded covered bridges left in the state. Many of them have been relocated to private properties. Others are cared for by local parks departments. Out of the 125, 17 of these are in Fairfield County.
