Dixon Branch - 1887
The Dixon Branch Covered bridge in Civitan Park near Lewisburg, in Preble County, Ohio. This 50-foot Childs through truss bridge was built in 1887 by Everett S. Sherman on Concord Road over Dixon's Branch in Dixon Township. The original construction costs, including superstructure, abutments, footers, and grading totaled $1,824. Dixon Branch was originally a 60-foot structure, one of 14 Childs truss bridges built by E. S. Sherman during his 10-year career in Preble County. Sherman was born to a bridge-building family in Delaware County in 1831. The covered bridge replaced a light steel span that had been severely damaged by a tornado in 1886.
Dixon Branch takes its name from Eli Dixon who was the first settler in the township which bears his name, Dixon. Eli moved from Georgia and settled in Ohio in 1804. Little is known about him, besides the fact that he was a captain in the Ohio Militia.
Originally, this covered bridge spanned Dixon Branch in Dixon Township from 1887 to 1963 on Concord Road. In 1963, a windstorm severely damaged this covered bridge. Preble County officials gave it to the Civitans of Lewisburg. Relocated in 1964 it was shortened to 50 feet. It currently is used as a historical shelter house, where people can go and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Relocated over dry land in 1964, it is open to pedestrians only.
