The Fitch's Covered Bridge is a wooden covered bridge over the West Branch of the Delaware River in the town of Delhi, and one of 24 covered bridges in New York State.
Built by James Frazier & James Warren, it was originally erected in 1870 in the village of Delhi on Kingston Street and moved three miles upstream to its present location in 1885. It was moved by David Wright and a town crew to this site known as Fitches Crossing. The single-span, timber bridge measuring 106 feet long and 20 feet wide carries Fitch Bridge Road over the West Branch of the Delaware River. The scissors –Truss construction was commonly used in covered bridges of intermediate span. The bridge was refurbished in 2001.
Covered bridges have long been in existence in New York State. At one time, over 300 spanned our rivers and streams. Due to flooding, storms, and other acts of nature, that number has dwindled to 24. Some were lost to vandalism and arson, which to covered bridge enthusiasts, is the most sinister of all.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
