Holz-Brucke - 1979
The 1979 Zehnders Holz Brucke Covered Bridge crosses over the Cass River in Saginaw County, Michigan. The 239-foot covered bridge was built in 1979 and is open to pedestrians and vehicles. Zehnder’s Holz Brucke, also known as Zehnder’s Wooden Bridge or Zehnder’s Covered Bridge, is a charming covered bridge in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Known as Michigan's Little Bavaria, the Frankenmuth covered bridge was a dream that the Zehnder brothers had, and with the assistance of covered bridge builder Milton Graton, it became a reality.
Constructed in the Town lattice truss design, the bridge is almost entirely built of Douglas fir clad in cedar shingles. It has two traffic lanes with two covered sidewalks, and the three spans are 239 feet long. Although not a historic bridge, the sheer size of Zehnder’s Holz Brucke is overwhelming. Less than 50 years old, it’s a stunning addition to the little piece of Bavaria that is Frankenmuth. Dedicated in September 1980, it connects Main Street to both sides of the Cass River.
