Built in 1880 by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster, Holliwell is Iowa's longest covered bridge, measuring 122 feet. This flat-top bridge has huge wooden arches over 70 feet long and rises to a height of more than 13 feet above the floor of the bridge. It remains in its original site over the Middle River southeast of Winterset. Holliwell was renovated in 1995 at a cost of $225,000.

Holliwell Covered Bridge was featured in “The Bridges of Madison County” movie and was used in the scene where Robert Kincaid photographed Francesca approaching the bridge in the family pickup truck.

The Holliwell Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
