Scipio - 1886
Scipio Covered Bridge in Jennings County is one of just two covered bridges left in this county in southern Indiana. Scipio Covered Bridge is a small-town landmark that locals cherish. This small town-covered bridge across Sand Creek is one of the rare ones that are still open to traffic today.
Built between 1886 and 1887, this single-span wooden-truss-covered bridge was made using the Howe Truss design, which was popular in that day. Smith Bridge Company, a construction company out of Toledo, Ohio did the job for $600. The bridge was later rehabilitated in 1984 and again in 2015 with a larger project to repair semi-truck damage to it. It was actually completely refurbished for more than $540,000.
Dimensions: Length of largest span: 145 ft.; total length: 155.8 ft.; deck width: 15.7 ft.; vertical clearance above deck: 13.4 ft.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this bridge sees about 50 vehicles per day.
