Dick Huffman - 1880
The Dick Huffman Covered Bridge was built near Putmanville in Putman County, Indiana in 1880. This bridge is Indiana's largest bridge, being 265 ft. plus a 4 ft. overhang at each end. This Howe truss bridge spanning Big Walnut Creek on Huffman Road was built in 1880 by an unknown builder. The two-span bridge has cut stone abutments and piles with a sheet metal roof and is 16 ft. wide and 15 ft. high. Known in its earlier days as the Wetky Bridge, it was named for the old Wetky Mill nearby. This bridge rightfully deserves the name Huffman as the county map shows the farm of Greely R. Huffman. Nearby and further upstream is the house of Carl A. Huffman. It is also called Webster's Farm Covered Bridge.
The west end of the bridge is tilting and gives the appearance that a good wind could do some severe damage.
Length of largest span: 128.9 ft.; total length: 268.0 ft.; deck width: 16.0 ft.; vertical clearance above deck: 15.4 ft.
In southwest Putnam County, Houck and Dick Huffman covered bridges are two of the three oldest bridges built-in 1880. Nine historic covered bridges are found in the Putnam County countryside.
Eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
