The 1867 Dr. Knisley Covered Bridge is a historic wooden covered bridge located in West St. Clair Township in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. It is an 87-foot-long (26 m) and 12.5 feet wide Burr Truss bridge with a shallow gable roof that crosses Dunning Creek. With vertical boards covering about 1/3rd of the bridge’s sides, its abutments are made of stone and mortar. The bridge was named after Dr. Knisley, a prominent local physician and community leader, and one of 15 historic covered bridges in Bedford County.
The Dr. Knisley Covered Bridge has a rich history and has played a vital role in the development of Fisherstown and the surrounding area. It was originally built to provide a means of crossing the river and connecting the nearby farms and homes to the rest of the region. The bridge was also used by horse-drawn carriages and later, by automobiles. The bridge served as a crucial transportation route for many years until it was eventually closed to vehicle traffic and became a pedestrian-only bridge.
Today, the bridge is surrounded by a beautiful park and picnic area just off the main road.
Knisley Bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
