Crawford - 1887
The Crawford Covered Bridge, built in 1887, is a historic Queen post truss covered bridge that crosses Robinson Fork of Wheeling Creek in West Finley, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
The 11-foot 7-inch wide by 39-foot long bridge has high sidewalls, a roof made of sheet metal, and crosswise planking. It is open to traffic across the Robinson Fork of Wheeling Creek.
The Crawford has two rectangular side windows on each side, in addition to the eave openings. It sits on cut stone and mortar abutments laid on the concrete foundations, and its abutments extend to form short stone and mortar wing walls. The Crawford is also reinforced with heavy timbers that are positioned in the streambed at equal intervals under the cross members of the deck. Very little is known of the origins of the Crawford Bridge. It was closed for six months in 1996 for restoration.
Of the 1,500 covered bridges that once stood in the state of Pennsylvania, as of 2019, approximately 200 remain.
