Windsor Mills -1867
Windsor Mills Bridge, also known as Wiswell Road Bridge or Warner Hollow Road Bridge, is a covered bridge that carries Covered Bridge Lane, formerly Wiswell Road, across Phelps Creek in Windsor Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. The bridge, one of currently 17 drivable bridges in the county, is a single-span Town Lattice truss design. The bridge sits atop cut stone abutments, one made from sandstone quarried nearby, and the other made of creek stone. The bridge was bypassed in the 1960s and closed to traffic, and Wiswell Road was rerouted west of the creek. In the 1980s, the bridge was completely closed due to safety reasons. It underwent extensive renovation from 2002 to 2004 and was then reopened to all traffic, except for trucks and buses.
The over 150-year-old, 120-foot single-span Windsor Mill Covered Bridge is one of 17 covered bridges in Ashtabula County and among more than 150 still standing throughout the Buckeye State. Noticeably, one of the center supports is made of sandstone from a nearby quarry, while the other is made from local creek stone.
Phelps Creek is a tributary of the Grand River. The 98-mile Grand River, designated Ohio's second Wild and Scenic River, begins in southeastern Geauga County. After passing through Trumbull and Ashtabula counties, the wandering river circles back to Lake County where it flows into Lake Erie near the Village of Fairport Harbor.
Each fall, the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival brings thousands of visitors to the county for self-tours of the covered bridges.
