Riverview - 2016
The Riverview Covered Pedestrian Bridge is a wooden Pratt truss-covered bridge built beneath the 93-foot-high Smolen-Gulf Bridge, completed in 2016. At 613 feet in length, it is the longest covered bridge in the country. The new Riverview pedestrian-covered bridge is 150 feet long and 14 feet wide. It is a Pratt truss design, like the Smolen-Gulf Bridge towering over it, and was designed by Smolen Engineering. The bridge sits below Smolen Bridge in Indian Trails Park and was dedicated on October 4, 2016.
This bridge one of the county's larger bridges carries only pedestrian traffic. It mirrors the Pratt arch design of its big brother, Smolen-Gulf, which rises above the pedestrian structure. Both bridges cross the Ashtabula River at Indian Trails Park, dedicated in 2016, providing exercise trails and a place to enjoy the beautiful river scenery.
This pedestrian bridge is 14 feet wide with poplar wood siding and a dark green sign with white lettering. The Pratt truss, combines diagonal and vertical beams into a web, making for a light yet strong bridge. There's also a "19" at the top for being the 19th covered bridge in the county.
Smolen, who spoke at the dedication, said he worked for years to preserve the county's covered bridges and garner a reputation for beautiful covered bridges.
"It was my dream to have ours be as good as those in Lancaster, Pennsylvania," he said. "We may not have quite as many (as Lancaster), but they are even more beautiful."
Lancaster has 25 covered bridges.
