John Bright #2 - 1881
The John Bright #2 Covered Bridge was built in 1881 by Augustus Borneman & Sons. This bridge has been carefully preserved, and it is the county's finest example of a reverse bow string truss system. The 75-foot bridge currently spans Fetters Run on the Ohio University-Lancaster campus. It is part of the Lancaster Bike Path, and it serves as the gateway to the headline concerts of the Lancaster Festival.
The suspension truss design is very unusual and is known to have been used in only a few bridges in the state. It is virtually identical to the nearby John Bright No. 1 Iron Bridge, although the Covered Bridge was strengthened by a wooden arch added around 1913. The design is somewhat similar to a number of mid to late-19th-century patents, but it is almost identical to Archibald McGuffie's 1861 patent.
The bridge was built at a cost of $933.00. There are only two Bowstring Truss-covered bridges in the United States and both of them are in Ohio. It is thought that the Burr arch was added after the 1913 flood and the opposing angles of the Bowstring and the Arch give the bridge its truly unique character. The bridge originally spanned Poplar Creek on TR 263. In 1986, the bridge was in poor condition with its sides gone and shotgun holes in its roof, and in 1998, the bridge was moved to its current location on the Ohio University grounds and rehabilitated. The bridge now rests on concrete abutments. It is covered with vertical boards on the sides and portals. The bridge is painted barn red inside and out and is open under the eaves for ventilation. The deck consists of lengthwise planking and it has a tin roof.
