Harpersfield - Closed
The Harpersfield Bridge is a covered bridge spanning the Grand River in Harpersfield Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. This double-span Howe truss bridge, one of currently 17 drivable covered bridges in the county, is the third-longest covered bridge in Ohio at 228 feet.
A flood in 1913 washed away the land at the north end of the bridge, and an 8-panel steel Pratt through truss span of 140 ft. approach was subsequently attached. The bridge was bypassed when State Route 534 was rerouted around the settlement of Harpersfield. The bridge features a walkway, added during its renovation in 1991-92.
This two-span Howe truss bridge was formerly the longest covered bridge in Ohio but is now the second-longest in the State. It spans the Grand River which is the primary drainage channel of western Ashtabula County. The bridge was built in 1868.
The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners approved a bid for work on the Harpersfield Covered Bridge. The project was awarded to Union Industrial Contractors, for a price of $6,057,260.50. One other company, Ruhlin, submitted a bid for $6,904,428.80. The estimated cost of the project was $5,625,000. The project completion date is Dec. 31, 2023.
